A Little Bit About Us:
KINDERGARTEN NEWS

* APRIL * ABRIL * APRIL * ABRIL * APRIL * ABRIL *

As we go forward into these final weeks, please remember that daily homework continues to be very important for the children. It helps them to master the skills they are learning now, as well as developing good work habits for next year. The children’s reading skills have taken flight, and will continue to do so with your encouraging and supportive work at home!
Please have your child read the CVC word list that was sent home. The final High Frequency Word list is coming home today. Your child will become a fluent reader by reading to you each day.

APRIL ACADEMIC OUTLINE

RELIGION:
Prayer of the month: Now It’s Night - a special bedtime prayer. Please continue to have your child recite the formal prayers learned this year. We continue to discuss, role-play, and practice the Gospel values with one another. We pray daily to Jesus, Jesus’ mother Mary, and our guardian angels. We take time to remember the people we love, those who are ill, and those who have gone to join our Father in Heaven. Our Prayer Request Baskets are full with your family’s prayer requests.
We completed our Lenten Journey with our Palm Sunday Prayer Service.
We hope that you displayed Jesus and his empty tomb on Easter. We thank the eighth and fifth graders for helping the kindergarten children with this project. We continue to work in our We Believe” workbook. The children have been working on our chapters, “Jesus Teaches and Helps Us” and “Jesus Wants Us to Share God’s Love. We will begin “We Belong to the Church” this week.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
The children have taken giant steps in their reading abilities. This is due to their increased phonemic and phonic skills and reading abilities. We continue to hope that you review and utilize each of the little books as they come home to you. They are wonderful tools for reinforcing what has been taught in the classroom, as well as helping to build your child’s sight vocabulary. Read to them daily and ask them to read to you too!! The children are working very well with writing, punctuating, and illustrating. We continue to read good literature daily and the children take dictation like pros!

MATH:
We have continued our work with addition and can solve and create a variety of equations. This month we introduced subtraction using the numberline. The children are writing and solving equations, as well as completing problem-solving activities that now ask them to “take away”. We are constantly amazed by how quickly the children are grasping these new concepts! We continue to practice our oral counting by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s and recognizing and printing the numbers 1-100. We have begun our unit on “telling time” to the “o’clock” - to the hour. Time is another concept that only has a basic introduction in Kindergarten, but the children have done very well with this new skill. They can draw the hands on the clock and write and read the numeric time (9:00).

SCIENCE:
We have started a unit of study on the Lifecycle of Butterfly. The children are learning about the “Metamorphosis”. They have enjoyed a number of wonderful books about butterflies, and have already created beautiful butterflies of their own in an art project that included Math (Symmetry) and Religion (New Life). Our Earth Day lesson is designed to teach simple actions the children can take to save energy and conserve natural resources.

Our days together in Kindergarten are truly wonderful! Can you believe that they are going by so quickly? We can’t!! However, we can tell by the magical transformation your children have gone through - what a joy they are!

Fondly,
