A Little Bit About Us:
May 2008Dear parents and students,
I am sure you are all in amazement that it is already May. This year has seemed to fly by. Please help to keep your student focused as the weather warms up, the hours of daylight increase, and spring sports move into full gear. We still have plenty to accomplish before the end of the school year. You should all be very proud of your persuasive speech presentations. Speaking in front of your peers can be very daunting! Thank you for working so hard on writing your speeches and making the speeches come to life through your verbal presentations.
I am quite excited about the mythology unit. The unit began with the introduction of Greek myths and how Greek accomplishments are still a part of our society today. The students will come to learn the names of many Greek gods, goddesses, and heroes. The students will explore many of the Greek myths discovering that each myth takes the god or goddess on a hero’s journey. We will discuss the hero journey and how it applies to almost all literature. As a read aloud, I will be reading a children’s version of Homer’s The Odyssey. This is a fabulous epic poem about one soldier’s journey, Odysseus, back home from fighting in the Trojan War.
In conjunction with this fictional genre of reading, the students will be writing fictional narratives. The students will be exposed to various fictional strategies through mentor authors such as Janelle Cannon, Kevin Henkes, Louis Sachar, Jerry Spinelli, and Margaret Wild to name a few.
In the computer lab, the students will continue to write their poetry books and add illustrations to some of the poems.
We are finishing our last unit in the vocabulary program. Vocabulary study and application will continue with the books we read in class.
In religion, we are continuing our study of Family Life. The students have been talking about family backgrounds, knowing yourself, and setting goals. We are thankful for all of the gifts we have received from God. Thank you for all of your support.
God Bless!
